– Reigning Philippine Basketball Associaion (PBA) Fiesta Cup champion Barangay Ginebra is confident a healthy Jayjay Helterbrand will suit up for the team when it begins its 2008-09 season two weeks from now.Coach Jong Uichico said the sleek-moving guard, adjudged the season-ending conference’s best player, should have fully recovered from the injury he suffered in the finals by the time the league opens the Philippine Cup on October 4.“He (Helterbrand) should be healthy by then," said Uichico.The six-foot-two Helterbrand suffered a delicate hamstring injury in Game 2 of the Kings’ title series with the Air21 Express.He failed to suit up the rest of the Finals, although the Kings went on to win the championship in seven games.Uichico recently expressed interest in having Air21 guard Wynne Arboleda to shore up the Ginebra backcourt.But he clarified that the team is not going after the former Manuel L. Quezon University standout, suggesting that the Express playmaker should be the one to personally offer himself if he’s willing to play for the Kings.

Barangay Ginebra coach Joseph Uichico said yesterday the outlook for the Kings is bright for next season even without a first or second round pick in the PBA draft to be held at Market! Market! in the Bonifacio Global City on Sunday.

Although the Kings were far from healthy in the recent Fiesta Conference finals, Uichico managed to pilot Ginebra to the title, upending Air21 in an explosive series that went the seven-game distance.

Uichico’s good news for Ginebra fans is the entire team will be ready to rumble when the Philippine Cup opens in October. He said none of Ginebra’s Walking Wounded will undergo surgery to recover from injuries.

Jay-Jay Helterbrand hurt his hamstring in Game 2 of the finals and sat out the rest of the series. Mark Caguioa, Eric Menk, Paul Artadi and Junthy Valenzuela were also plagued by injuries during the finals.

“They just need rest and rehab,” said Uichico. “Up to now, I don’t know how we won the championship. It had to be an act of God. When Jay-Jay went down in Game 2, I asked myself how we could win without him. I just tried to rally the guys behind Jay-Jay and turn it into something positive.”

Uichico, 46, said winning the crown boiled down to energy, intensity, spirit, hard work and prayers.

“The victory was dedicated to the players who were injured,” said Uichico. “Jay-Jay was an inspiration. He showed up for every game in uniform, shot around during the warm-ups and encouraged the guys. Where did we get the edge? Where did we find it? From the fans. When we won Game 6, it was probably because Air21 could afford to lose it. But in Game 7, the fans gave us the extra push in the last quarter. That was when Air21 really felt the pressure and the inexperience showed.”

Uichico credited the Express for a gutsy stand.

“That’s a championship-caliber team, no doubt about it,” said Uichico. “If they keep that team intact, they’ll win a lot of titles for sure. A team with Arwind Santos, Gary David, Ranidel de Ocampo, Wynne Arboleda, Niño Canaleta, Egay Billones and the others will only get better with experience because the talent is already there. Bo (Perasol) coached a heckuva series and we were lucky to come out on top.”

In the coming draft, Ginebra gave up its third overall pick to Coca-Cola in a three-way trade involving Rudy Hatfield and Rafi Reavis a few years back. That pick later went to Air21 for Mark Telan and ended up with Magnolia for Gabby Espinas.

Ginebra also lost its third pick in the second round to Air21 in the Ronald Tubid deal.

Uichico said there are at least seven Ginebra playing contracts expiring before the year ends. He mentioned the priority is to re-sign Helterbrand, Caguioa, Tubid and Billy Mamaril. Still with live contracts are Menk, Artadi, Sunday Salvacion, Valenzuela and Reavis.

Uichico said he seriously thought of reactivating Helterbrand for Games 6 and 7 but after testing his leg, decided against it. “Jay-Jay wanted to play but when he still felt pain in his hamstring, we didn’t want to push it,” said Uichico. “Luckily, Ronald became available. We got an email from Dr. (George) Canlas, who was in Beijing, clearing Ronald for testing. He gave us a great effort. In Game 6, what turned it around was his block on Billones. He provided the hustle we needed to beat Air21.”

Uichico also paid tribute to Menk and Valenzuela.

“Eric was struggling throughout the conference but we knew in the finals, he would get back his focus,” said Uichico. “In the nitty-gritty, you can always rely on Eric. Junthy gave us stability. Players look up to him and respect him. He’s very smart and he settles the guys down on the court. We never looked to him for scoring. We looked to him for his leadership.”

Another contributor to the title surge was Artadi.

“When Jay-Jay got hurt, we moved Paul to the starting lineup,” said Uichico. “He used to bring a lot of energy off the bench so when he became a starter, we switched our tempo. Allan (Caidic) and Kirk (Collier) have been working on Paul’s skills and the results are evident. Paul knows he’s the last option when everything else is exhausted. It’s just a matter of building his confidence.”

Uichico said Alex Crisano also played a key role in the victory.

“I told Alex not to get caught up with the showbiz thing,” said Uichico. “We got him for his rebounding and his physical presence at the post, against guys like Asi Taulava and Dorian Peña. He tends to lose his concentration when the crowd gets going but he’s doing okay.”

Uichico said his gameplan in the finals was not to engage Air21 in a shootout. “How we controlled the tempo, how we made it into a low-scoring defensive series, how we won with injured players - I don’t know up to now,” he continued. “We knew what we were up against – a very athletic, physical team with players who could jump out of the gym. Somehow, we were ready for them and the fans gave us the spirit to never say die.”

Express seize lead vs Kings

Niño Canaleta caught fire in the second half, fueling a decisive run that carried Air21 to a come-from-behind 97-87 win and 2-1 lead over Barangay Ginebra in their Smart PBA Fiesta Conference best-of-seven finals showdown at the Araneta Coliseum last night.

Canaleta went 5-of-5 from the three-point arc, making four in a torrid Air21 fourth-quarter attack that had the Express surging ahead at 87-76 from a 64-66 count after the third period.

Steven Thomas came through a huge double-double game with 20 points and the same number of rebounds and had his contribution in the Air21 romp catching the Kings by surprise.

“We generated offense from Steven (Thomas) and KG (Canaleta) when needed the most. I’ll always get points from Gary David but Thomas’ post plays were confidence-booster for his teammates,” said Air21 coach Bo Perasol.

“At the back of their (the Express’) mind, Steven can’t go one-on-one against Chris Alexander because of Alexander’s great blocking ability. Steven drew double-team defense in the fourth quarter, leaving KG open to make those crucial shots,” Perasol added.

Ginebra started strong for the first time in the series but couldn’t sustain the effort, missing the leadership and endgame composure of injured ace guard Jayjay Helterbrand.

Not even the triple-double game of Alexander and the solid performance by Sunday Salvacion off the bench could keep Ginebra from folding up in the payoff period.

Alexander swatted away 11 shots — the most number of blocks by any player since Jerry Codiñera also made 11 in a Purefoods uniform 19 years ago. The 7-foot-1 Ginebra behemoth also got 17 rebounds and 14 points.

Patience and resiliency paid off for the Express who scored a second straight win after losing the series opener. They go for a pivotal 3-1 lead in Game Four set in the same venue Wednesday.

“A 2-1 lead is a lot different from 1-2. Two-one is a win away from 3-1 and 3-1 is a win away from the championship,” said Perasol. “We’ll go out with fresh motivation in Game Four.”

Ginebra pride at stake

Barangay Ginebra coach Joseph Uichico admitted yesterday prized point guard Jay-Jay Helterbrand could be lost for the rest of the PBA Fiesta Conference finals but vowed to regroup the Kings in anticipation of a long series.

“Right now, we’re preparing for Game 3 (tonight) without Jay-Jay,” said Uichico. “The doctors’ prognosis is if there’s swelling or some kind of black and blue, he could be out for the series. He couldn’t walk after Game 2 which was unlike Paul’s (Artadi) hamstring injury because he could’ve actually come back in Game 1 after getting hurt in the first quarter.”

Helterbrand underwent rehab therapy yesterday morning and at presstime, Uichico waited for advice from the doctors. Uichico said Helterbrand is a doubtful starter tonight.

“This is for the championship,” said Uichico. “We’ve just got to find ways to win, with or without Jay-Jay. We’ll try to adjust. When Ronald (Tubid) went down, we found a solution to compensate by giving more minutes to Chris (Pacana) and Sunday (Salvacion). Without Jay-Jay, the logical thing is to move Mark (Caguioa) back as a starter. We can’t activate anyone to fill spots because under PBA rules, you stick with your lineup at the end of the eliminations.”

Uichico said it’ll be difficult to live down Ginebra’s 124-90 loss to Air21 in Game 2 last Friday. The Express dominated the Kings in every significant statistical department – in rebounds, 55-41, second chance points, 17-6, fastbreak points, 23-7, turnovers, 14-25, free throws, 18-34 to 12-17, and field goal attempts, 97-77.

“The loss was embarrassing, more than anything,” rued Uichico. “The way we lost was something you never want to happen. Our pride and ego took a beating. We’re hoping it makes us come out fighting in Game 3 because our pride is at stake.”

Uichico’s consolation is the loss came early in the best-of-7 series.

“We were flat in Game 2, maybe because we thought winning Game 1 was easy,” continued Uichico. “But I’ve always maintained we’re the underdogs. Man for man, Air21 has a lot of advantages over us. Don’t forget they were the first to qualify for the semis as the No. 1 team. They’re tall and quick – they jump out of the gym and play physical. They put bodies on our scorers. In Game 2, Wynne (Arboleda) went after Jay-Jay right from the start then Arwind (Santos) took on Mark. Playing physical is part of the game. We just have to play better as a team and show a collective effort.”

Uichico said he noticed Air21 made several key adjustments in Game 2, like playing a semi-zone with Steve Thomas guarding space under the basket in a floating position and a local, usually Homer Se, defending Chris Alexander at the post. Another adjustment was bringing up Gary David from the bench.

“The adjustments didn’t really hurt us in a big way,” said Uichico. “I just thought we were outhustled by them. It’s okay if we don’t get too many offensive rebounds but they shouldn’t get them either. They were more aggressive. We’ve always known Air21 to be a dangerous team and they proved it in Game 2.”

Uichico said to win, the Kings can’t relax on offense and defense.

“We just have to step up on both ends,” he went on. “They play the same style every game. They put up a lot of shots. We’ve got to surpass their intensity. Chris has to be more aggressive in getting rebounds. But the focus is on the locals. Air21’s locals did the damage in Game 2.”

Alexander was far from dominating in Game 2, pulling down only 10 rebounds compared to 25 in Game 1. Helterbrand was also off, chipping in just four points before limping off the court in the third period. Ironically, both Alexander and Helterbrand were honored before Friday’s contest. Alexander was cited as Best Import and Helterbrand, Best Player.

“I don’t know if those awards had anything to do with playing a little flat,” said Uichico. “But we’ll be back. We’re the never-say-die team. The situation could be worse. The series is tied, 1-1, so we’re starting all over again. Our winning streak of 13 straight games couldn’t go on forever and if it’s to be broken, better now than later when we’re in the middle of the series.”

Uichico said there are lessons to be learned from the Game 2 setback.

“We’ve seen teams get blown out in the NBA Finals and they’ve bounced back,” he said. “That’s how it is sometimes in basketball. The important thing is you’ve got be ready to play hard game in, game out – whether coming off a big win or a big loss.”

Finding a way to win is Uichico’s challenge. But if there’s anyone capable of facing up to the task, it’s Uichico who has won six PBA titles with San Miguel Beer and one with Ginebra.

Express blast Kings, level title series

Air21 made a big comeback from a nine-point defeat in the series opener, playing aggressively throughout last night to end Barangay Ginebra’s amazing streak with a king-sized 124-90 win in Game Two of the Smart PBA Fiesta Conference best-of-seven finals at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

Badly beaten on rebounding and on running game in Game One, the Express turned things around, besting the Kings’ performance Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Air21 outscored Ginebra on all quarters in dealing the Kings their first loss in their last 14 games.

The Express sat on a 13-point cushion at the turn and started the final half with a 14-to-nothing run to settle the outcome of the game early, to the disappointment of the predominant Ginebra crowd.

The Bert Lina Group franchise instead tied the series at 1-1. The two teams dispute the 2-1 lead as the series returns to the Big Dome for Game Three tomorrow.

“We’re really determined to make a statement that we’re for real,” said coach Bo Perasol as the Express pulled off the 34-point win — the biggest winning margin in franchise history.

The Express led by as many as 36 points late in the game with each one responding well to the challenge.

Arwind Santos and Gary David fired 20 points apiece with nine other Air21 players scoring at least eight.

“All the players responded pretty well. We wanted to put in Ginebra’s mind that they’re beatable. We can’t afford to fall in a 0-2 hole against Ginebra,” said Perasol.

The Air21 mentor said the key was controlling the boards and keeping Ginebra from running.

The Express outrebounded the Kings, 55-41, and produced 23 fastbreak points as against Ginebra’s seven.

Steven Thomas played much better than Wednesday, showing up Chris Alexander curiously on the night the Ginebra reinforcement was named the Best Import.

Thomas produced 18 rebounds, 10 points, five assists and two blocks as against Alexander’s 10 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and four blocks.

Jayjay Helterbrand also had a miserable game on the night he was crowned Best Player of the Conference. He struggled for four points and failed to finish the game, sustaining a suspected hamstring injury late in the third period.

The Express played with a lot of energy and intensity right in the opening half, taking the first quarter at 26-18 and carrying a 58-45 margin over into the second half.

The two teams both hit at a 47.4-percent clip but the Express scored much much more on hustle plays.

Steven Thomas alone nearly matched the rebounds of the whole Ginebra team, 14-17, in the first 24 minutes of play. The Express totaled 32 rebounds, 14 off the offensive boards leading to a 7-0 advantage by Air21 on second-chance points.

Alexander was limited to four rebounds while Mark Caguioa committed four fouls in the first half.

Barangay Ginebra tries to stoke the fire of its blazing start in the Smart PBA Fiesta Conference best-of-seven finals series with Air21, going for another win in Game Two at the Ynares Center in Antipolo tonight.

The Kings are expected to sweep the Best Import and Best Player of the Conference awards during ceremonies before the 7 p.m. game, and this may serve an extra boost for Chris Alexander and the Ginebra locals seeking to sustain their amazing unbeaten run in the playoffs.

Already on a 13-game romp dating back to the elims, the Kings are tipped to make it two in a row although the Express are expected to come up with adjustments to neutralize Ginebra’s domination of the boards.

The Kings outrebounded the Express, 63-51, and produced more fastbreak points, 22-12, in clinching the series’ opener at 105-96.

Paul Artadi provided some spark coming off the bench towards the end of the first quarter Wednesday but the former UE Warrior is a doubtful starter today due to hamstring injury.

“It’s a concern for us. We have already found a way to compete without Ronald Tubid (with a dislocated ankle). Without Artadi, again we have to find ways to fill in a gap,” said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico.

Artadi, who has improved to become a key part in Uichico’s regular rotation, churned out seven points, two assists and one steal in six minutes of action before sustaining the injury.

Alexander, Mark Caguioa, Jayjay Helterbrand, Junthy Valenzuela and Eric Menk delivered the bulk of the production for the Kings now looking on their way to setting the longest streak in a conference since Crispa won its first 19 games in the 1980 All-Filipino Conference.

The Kings have won 16 of their last 17 games and have gone 17-3 since Alexander took over from Ernest Brown.

The 7-foot-1 Iowa State product could well be the hands down choice as the conference’s Best Import. The Best Player of the Conference award is a tossup between Helterbrand and Caguioa.

The season awards rites will be held before Game Four with Sta. Lucia top gun Kelly Williams favored to win the Most Valuable Player plum.

Badly beaten in Game One, Air21 coach Bo Perasol is confident they will fare a lot better in Game Two.

Perasol thought jitters took their toll on the team playing its very first PBA finals game. He admitted there should be some adjustment.

“I think those aspects of the game we knew they were going to beat us with became exactly those,” said Perasol, referring to fastbreak and second chance points Ginebra used to scuttle Air21.

The fact that Alexander outplayed Air21 counterpart Steven Thomas also gnawed at Perasol. “He (Thomas) has to do a better job,” he said.

Despite its lapses, Air21 still proved to be like a bad dream that won’t go away for Ginebra.

With Ranidel de Ocampo leading the way, the Express brought a 20-point deficit down to 82-89 before Thomas joined in and helped make it a six-point game.

“That’s what we’ve been saying about Air21 as a team. We’re up by 18 or 16 points and then all of sudden they’ll score five straight points. They’re really a very streaky team,” said Uichico.

“It’s good to have the 1-0 lead. But we still have a long way to go,” Uichico added.

The Barangay Ginebra-Air21 battle for the Smart PBA Fiesta Conference crown finally begins today with the Kings looking to stretch their franchise-record run and the Express hoping for the best in their first ever finals before an expected sellout crowd at the Araneta Coliseum.

With both teams well rested and raring to plunge into action, the Kings and the Express try to outgun each other in a best-of-seven series tipped to go down-to-the-wire.

Gametime is at 7:20 p.m. after the one-game playoff for third place between the Red Bull Barakos and the Magnolia Beverage Masters at 4:50 p.m.

Ginebra and Air21 are motivated to win the championship with the Kings even making two import changes and one major trade to bounce back from a shaky start to clinch the first finals berth behind an amazing 12-game streak.

The Express, on the other hand, are leaving no stone unturned in their quest for a first PBA crown in six years.

“The title series is a toss-up,” said PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios.

The Kings and the Express are also both confident of their chances. Curiously, the two teams piled up similar 16-8 win-loss records to reach the finals.

Air21 had its big charge in the elimination round which it topped with a 12-6 card while Ginebra started its romp midway through the elims, sustaining it through the playoffs to be on track to surpassing Alaska’s 13-game run during its 1996 grand slam season.

The Ginebra-Air21 duel has been called many names but Air21 skipper Wynne Arboleda puts it aptly: “There’s no favorite nor crowd factor here. It’s going be a battle. Whoever defends well and shoots better will win it.”

Air21 coach Bo Perasol is confident of their chances but expects a very tough job topping a highly touted opponent which hasn’t been beaten in its last three finals stints.

The Express have to contend with players like Mark Caguioa, Eric Menk, Jayjay Helterbrand, Junthy Valenzuela and Rafi Reavis, each one having played at least five championship series.

For Air21, Homer Se, Egay Billones and Gabby Espinas are the only players who have played in the finals, getting the experience in their previous tiffs before joining the Express.

Air21 main men Gary David, Arwind Santos and Ranidel de Ocampo had been exposed in the finals only during their collegiate days.

The Express, however, insist they’re not scared of the Kings whom they fought to 1-1 tie in the elims.

The two teams figured in two previous playoffs with Ginebra prevailing in the 2006 Philippine Cup wildcard and Air21 getting even in the same stage of the same tourney in 2007.

“My players are not highly touted but they’re winners in their own right. Given the chance, they would grab it,” said Air21 mentor.

“To be intimidated is negative. We’re living with our company motto of ‘we deliver no matter what.’ We face tall odds versus Ginebra but we’ll do it,” he added.

Air21 import Steven Thomas expressed guarded optimism, having high respect for Ginebra counterpart Chris Alexander.

At 6-9, Thomas gives away at least four inches in height to Alexander but the two seem to be equal in fighting heart.

Expectedly, the two coaches declined to predict how long the series would last.

“Of course, I’d like it to be short in our favor but that’s highly improbable. But long or short, we’ll give it our best shot,” said Perasol.

“I’m not good at predicting. One thing sure, we’ll try to win each game,” said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico in search of his eighth crown in the league.

Winalis ng Brgy. Ginebra ang Red Bull sa apat na dikit na laro ng semis para tuluyang sumampa sa finals ng 2007-08 SMART PBA Fiesta Conference.

Kinailangan pa ng Gin Kings ang extra five minutes sa unang laro sa Araneta Coliseum kagabi bago tuluyang ipinagpag ang makulit na Barakos, 101-97.

Huling nagkaroon ng 4-0 sweep sa isang best-of-seven series sa PBA ay noon pang 1992 Third Conference nang kubabawan ni Tony Harris at ng Swift ang Seven-Up.

Sa harap ng 11,878-kataong pumuno sa Big Dome, pumutok si Mark Caguioa ng 33 points kagabi para ihatid ang prangkisa ng Gin Kings sa ika-17 pagkakataong pagsampa sa finals.

Ika-30 pagkakataon sa career ni Caguioa na tumipak siya ng 30 points o higit pa sa isang game, at pang-walong 30-point game kontra Red Bull. Ika-limang 30+ game din para sa tinaguriang ‘The Furious’ ng Ginebra ngayong conference.

Pambungad ni Barangay Ginebra San Miguel coach Jong Uichico matapos madalawahang-sunod sa Red Bull Energy Drink sa kanilang best-of-seven semifinals series.

Nagbida si Jayjay Helterbrand sa tinikadang 27 points at nine assists tungo sa 111-104 panalo ng Ginebra kontra sa Red Bull sa Game 2 ng 2008 SMART-PBA Fiesta Conference.

Hawak na ng crowd-favorite Kings ang 2-0 bentahe sa semis papasok ng Game 3 sa Ynares Center sa Antipolo City bukas, pero ayaw magkumpiyansa ni coach Jong. May punto ang Ginebra coach, dahil nasuong na rin sila sa sitwasyong katulad ng kinalalagyan ng Bulls ngayon.

Noong nakaraang season sa Philippine Cup finals, baon din sa 0-2 ang Ginebra kontra San Miguel Beer pero nakabalik pa ang Kings.

Uichico sees an aggressive Red Bull 5

BARANGAY Ginebra coach Jong Uichico expects the Red Bull Barakos to make a very aggressive charge in Game 2 of their best-of-seven Smart Philippine Basketball Association Fiesta Conference semi-final series at the Araneta Coliseum tomorrow.

Uichico blamed the long layoff that Red Bull had after qualifying early for the semis which, luckily for Ginebra, took its toll on the Barakos. Uichico noted that “their timing was off because they were rusty. That also contributed to their turnovers.”

In addition, Red Bull import Adam Parada appeared to be nursing what was believed to be a hamstring injury that hampered his mobility and hurt the team.

But knowing coach Yeng Guiao’s fighting qualities, Uichico expects Red Bull to begin Game 2 aggressively in an effort to disrupt the rhythm of the Gin Kings.

Uichico said Ginebra was shooting very well and committed less turnovers than their usual average of 20 per game, finishing with 16 and that, too, helped secure the big win.

The soft-spoken coach of the PBA’s most popular team commended point guard Paul Artadi, whose energy rubs off on the rest of the team.

But Uichico expressed some concern over how Celino Cruz in particular tried to rough-up and intimidate the little spitfire, pointing to one play, where Cruz banged into Artandi, clearly going for the man and not the ball, which the referees didn’t even call.

He said both superstar Mark Caguioa, who sparks the team and Artadi, are very effective coming off the bench and the two players themselves want it that way because it creates problems for the opposing team. Ronnie Nathanielsz
